    Outlander: Je Suis Prest
    {I Am Ready}

    The Highlands of Scotland 1743

    A country on the brink of upheaval. The Jacobite movement and sentiment runs deep throughout the Highlands – that passionate desire to restore the House of Stuart to the British throne. Scottish clans desire their independence while the British crave domination, setting the stage for the inevitable, violent clash of ideals and convictions.

    Trouble with the English is far from the only difficulties that the people in the Highlands face. Within their own ranks are those who side with the British – either openly or surreptitiously. Historically some allegiances have been a bit malleable given the proper British enticement: wealth, title or land. Such changing alliances and subterfuge will soon pit brother against brother.

    The clans have begun to gather secretly in order to plan a united front against the British – under the guise of their customary Highland games and clan gatherings. A mobile clan gathering of sorts has been started. The clan chieftains and other important clansmen have been traveling from one section of the highlands to another, rallying the clans to oppose the British and in support of restoring the Stuarts to the throne. But there are those in their midst whose goals are not quite so straightforward. Their loyalty not so clearly defined, threatening a united front before such a thing can even be negotiated.

    To add further conflict and tension to the Highlands, a band of thieves have been roaming the Scottish countryside. These ruffians, descendants of the Border Reivers who had operated along the England/Scotland border years before, are now operating in the Lowlands causing difficulty and panic among the inhabitants. The Reivers have begun using the Highlands as their hideout, to the consternation of the clans there, and the English have now increased their own presence in the Highlands, determined to root out the troublemakers.

    Added to the mix is the Scottish love of myths and legends: selkies, waterhorses, changelings, witches. And what of the standing stones found scattered across the highlands? Do they serve a purpose? Rumor has it that they are a portal to other times. Could these travelers from the future affect the past if they chose to do so? Would the events to come, The Jacobite Rising of 1745 and the Highland slaughter at Culloden, occur if there were those who were determined to change history?
